Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope)

The Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope) is the Yukon counterpart of the WMAC(NWT). The Council’s geographic area of jurisdiction is the Yukon North Slope, the part of the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (ISR) within the Yukon. As established in the Inuvialuit Final Agreement, the Yukon North Slope falls under a special conservation regime, the dominant purpose of which is the conservation of wildlife, habitat and traditional native use.

The Council provides advice to the appropriate federal or territorial Minister on all matters relating to wildlife policy and the management, regulation, and administration of wildlife, habitat and harvesting for the Yukon North Slope. WMAC(NS) determines and recommends appropriate quotas for Inuvialuit harvesting of game in the Yukon North Slope and advises on measures required to protect habitat that is critical for wildlife or harvesting. The Council also provides advice on issues pertaining to the Yukon North Slope to the Porcupine Caribou Management Board, the Yukon Land Use Planning Commission, the Environmental Impact Screening Committee and Review Board and other appropriate groups. WMAC(NS) has prepared a Wildlife Conservation and Management Plan and a Long-term Research Plan for the Yukon North Slope. These plans will help government and the Inuvialuit promote and implement the special conservation regime of the area.

WMAC(NS) consists of two members appointed by the Inuvialuit Game Council, one member appointed by the Minister of the Environment of Canada, one member appointed by the Yukon Territorial Government, and an independent chairperson.

Please visit the WMAC(NS) Website for more information.
